"The Tuscan Archipelago is a chain of islands between the Ligurian Sea and Tyrrhenian Sea, west of Tuscany, Italy.
The archipelago contains the islands of Elba (the largest island of the group), Pianosa, Capraia,Montecristo, Giglio, Gorgona and Giannutri, all of which are protected as part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
The islands' proximity to several major cities has made them a favourite tourist location. History and literature has ensured that most people are familiar with the islands of Elba and Montecristo."
the Archipelago is formed by 7 islands, the major of which is Elba:

There are several ports on the Italian coast to dipart from, for a cruise in the Archipelago.
Coming from north of Italy, you can rent a boat in Castiglioncello, which is some 40nm from Elba. or you can go closer and start from the Ports of Salivoli, Scarlino, Punta Ala, all well equipped and with plenty of charter companies to rent a boat
Not all of the Islands allow landing. In fact your chances to find a port or a nice bay to drop anchor are limited to Elba, Capraia and Giglio.
The sea is very beautiful and there are very nice things to see on the ground as well, especially on the big Elba Island, which has nice cities and also a high mountain.
the best period to visit the Archipelago is from march to october, but consider that August is usually very crowded and prices raise dramatically.
