"The Tuscan Archipelago is a chain of islands between the Ligurian Sea and Tyrrhenian Sea, west of TuscanyItaly.

The archipelago contains the islands of Elba (the largest island of the group), PianosaCapraia,MontecristoGiglioGorgona and Giannutri, all of which are protected as part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.

The islands' proximity to several major cities has made them a favourite tourist location. History and literature has ensured that most people are familiar with the islands of Elba and Montecristo."

the Archipelago is formed by 7 islands, the major of which is Elba:

Island km² Population
Elba 224 30 000
Pianosa 10 0
Capraia 19 366
Montecristo 13 0
Giglio 24 1553
Gorgona 2 220
Giannutri 3 102
Total: 295km² 31 875

more info on the Area can be found on the Tuscan Archipleago National Park Website at http://www.islepark.it/inglese/

There are several ports on the Italian coast to dipart from, for a cruise in the Archipelago.

Coming from north of Italy, you can rent a boat in Castiglioncello,  which is some 40nm from Elba. or you can go closer and start from the Ports of Salivoli, Scarlino, Punta Ala, all well equipped and with plenty of charter companies to rent a boat

Not all of the Islands allow landing. In fact your chances to find a port or a nice bay to drop anchor are limited to Elba, Capraia and Giglio.

The sea is very beautiful and there are very nice things to see on the ground as well, especially on the big Elba Island, which has nice cities and also a high mountain.

the best period to visit the Archipelago is from march to october, but consider that August is usually very crowded and prices raise dramatically.

No rate
the fetovaia bay, placed in the SW side of the Elba Island, is surely one of the most beautiful bays of the area.
