The Ionian Islands, in the NW part of Greece, are an excellent sailing area for summer holydays.
Safe, well protected, full of nice anchorages and moorings, they provide an outstanding cruising area for families and groups of friends.
The wind blows almost everyday, but never too strong (the cyclades Meltemi does not belong to this area...), and the sea can never bee to rough as the area is well protected between the many islands and the coast.
People are friendly, and there's plenty of small citiies in which to stop for a dinner in a cheap taverna
Big Marinas are rare, anyway, but many small cities provide morring opportunities (you'll need to anchor, anyway)
from Wikipedia:
The seven main islands are, from north to south:
- Kerkyra (Κέρκυρα) usually known as Corfu in English
- Paxi (Παξοί) also known as Paxos in English
- Lefkada (Λευκάδα) also known as Lefkas in English
- Ithaki (Ιθάκη) usually known as Ithaca in English
- Kefallonia (Κεφαλλονιά) often known as Kefalonia/Cephalonia/Kefallinia in English
- Zakynthos (Ζάκυνθος) sometimes known as Zante in English
- Kythira (Κύθηρα) sometimes known as Cerigo in English
The six northern islands are off the west coast of Greece, in the Ionian Sea. The seventh island, Kythira, is off the southern tip of the Peloponnesus, the southern part of the Greek mainland. It should be noted that Kythira is not part of the periphery of Ionian Islands (Ionioi Nisoi), as it is included in the periphery of Attiki.
there are also other smaller island worth a visit, though, such as anti-paxos, skorpios, athokos and more
